What Is Kid Mohair? Why Kid Mohair and Silk Are Such a Popular Yarn Blend

WHAT IS KID MOHAIR AND WHY IS IT SO SPECIAL?

In our previous article, we explored the history of mohair, where it comes from, and how it became one of the most valued natural fibres in the textile world. In this article, we focus on kid mohair — the finest and most valuable type of mohair, used to create some of the world's most finest natural yarns.

If you have not yet read our article "What Is Mohair?", we invite you to start there first.

DIFFERENT TYPES OF MOHAIR

Not all mohair is the same. The quality of mohair largely depends on the age of the Angora goat when the fibre is collected.

Kid mohair comes from young Angora goats during the first months of their lives. At this stage, the fibres are exceptionally soft, lightweight and delicate, which is why kid mohair is considered the most valuable type of mohair.

Its fibres are naturally smooth, fine and bright white in colour. Thanks to these qualities, kid mohair is widely used in the production of premium yarns and luxury textiles.

Some of the qualities that make kid mohair so popular include:

  • Exceptional softness and a beautiful natural sheen;
  • Natural temperature regulation, helping the wearer stay warm when it is cool and comfortable when temperatures rise;
  • A smoother and silkier feel compared to mohair obtained from older goats.

Although mohair has many outstanding qualities, 100% mohair yarn is rarely used on its own in knitwear production. To improve the performance and durability of the yarn, it is often blended with other fibres. One of the most highly regarded combinations is kid mohair and silk.

KID MOHAIR AND SILK

To better understand why this combination is so popular, it is worth briefly looking at silk itself.

Silk has been used for thousands of years and is believed to have originated in ancient China and the Indus region. Like kid mohair, silk is valued for its comfort, softness and ability to adapt to different temperatures.

Silk helps retain warmth when it is cold, while remaining comfortable and breathable in warmer weather. It is also known for its strength, elegant sheen and incredibly smooth feel against the skin.

When kid mohair and silk yarn is produced, the delicate kid mohair fibres are spun around a silk core. The silk provides strength and stability, while the kid mohair adds softness, lightness and volume.

For many years, this combination of natural fibres has been a favourite among luxury knitwear manufacturers. It combines the airy softness of kid mohair with the durability and elegance of silk.

At MATTILDE KNITWEAR, we work exclusively with a yarn made from 75% kid mohair and 25% silk. When choosing materials, we have always preferred natural fibres that offer comfort, longevity and timeless beauty.

One of the things that surprises people most when they first touch a kid mohair and silk garment is how incredibly light it feels. The knitwear looks warm and cosy, yet weighs almost nothing. Many people say that this is something photographs simply cannot capture.

Over the years, we have found that few materials combine lightness, softness and comfort as beautifully as kid mohair and silk.

We also believe these qualities help explain why so many of our customers return to MATTILDE KNITWEAR after their first purchase.
