Frequently Asked Questions About Mohair
What is the difference between mohair and kid mohair?
Mohair comes from Angora goats, while kid mohair comes from younger Angora goats, usually during their first year. Kid mohair fibres are finer and generally feel softer against the skin. They also create the light, fluffy texture that makes kid mohair knitwear so distinctive.
Is kid mohair good quality?
Yes. Kid mohair is considered a high-quality natural fibre because it is soft, light, warm and beautifully airy. When combined with silk, it becomes stronger and smoother while keeping its delicate appearance. Kid mohair and silk yarn is made entirely from natural fibres.
Is kid mohair knitwear itchy?
Kid mohair is finer and generally softer than regular mohair, while silk gives the yarn a smoother feel. Most people find our kid mohair and silk knitwear comfortable to wear, although everyone’s skin is different. Those with very sensitive skin may prefer to wear a thin top underneath.
Can knitwear be made from 100% mohair?
Yes, it can. However, adding silk helps the yarn hold its shape, improves its strength and gives the knitwear a smoother finish. Our blend of kid mohair (75%) and silk (25%) keeps the beautiful softness of mohair while making the knit more durable.
Do mohair knitwear last a long time?
A good-quality mohair knitwear can be enjoyed for many years. Gentle washing, drying it flat and storing it folded will help preserve its shape and softness. Some of our customers return to the MATTILDE KNITWEAR studio wearing pieces they bought ten or more years ago, showing how long a well-cared-for knit can remain beautiful. A little natural fluffing or pilling may appear with wear, but this can usually be removed gently.
